The World’s First Ship-To-Ship Bunkering Operation of Green Ammonia Fuel

The FKAB Marine Design L21 ammonia carrier, converted to ammonia bunker vessel, has now made its first STS bunkering operation.

The FKAB Marine Design L21 ammonia carrier Shenghang Yongle, was recently converted for ship-to-ship liquid ammonia fuel bunkering.
The vessel was then the world’s first operational ammonia bunker vessel.

On October 13, 2026, the world's first ship-to-ship bunkering operation of green ammonia fuel was successfully completed in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province. Operated by Jiangsu Andefu Energy Development Co., Ltd., "Shenghang Yongle", the world's first dedicated liquid ammonia bunkering vessel, successfully supplied 1,000 tons of green ammonia to Mineral Europa, an ammonia-powered vessel owned by Belgian maritime group CMB.TECH.
The operation was jointly conducted by China Energy Engineering Group Hydrogen Energy Co., Ltd., CMB.TECH, and Jiangsu Andefu Energy Technology Co., Ltd. This marks the first time that the entire green ammonia value chain which covering production, transportation, storage, bunkering and application has been fully connected. It represents a significant step forward for green ammonia as a zero-carbon alternative fuel for deep-sea shipping, moving it from small-scale demonstration towards commercial operation.

As the world's first green ammonia ship-to-ship bunkering operation, the project achieved four "global firsts":
- The world's first commercial ship-to-ship bunkering operation using green ammonia
- The commissioning of the world's first dedicated ammonia fuel bunkering vessel
- The issuance of the world's first ship-to-ship liquid ammonia bunkering license
- And the world's first green ammonia project directly connected with green power and enabling full-chain carbon footprint traceability.
