    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

A special purpose vessel is designed around a specific operation or mission that cannot be efficiently fulfilled by a standard commercial vessel. Its hull, machinery, systems, equipment and working areas are therefore developed around the vessel’s intended function.

In commercial shipping, MPV commonly stands for Multi-Purpose Vessel, a vessel designed to carry different types of cargo such as breakbulk, project cargo and containers.

FKAB designs purpose-built vessels for specialized operations where standard vessel types do not meet the operational requirements. This can include offshore and service vessels, research and support vessels, specialized cargo vessels and other one-off designs developed around a specific mission or operating profile.

The process starts by defining what the vessel must achieve, including its mission, operating area, payload, capacity, speed, endurance and port or infrastructure constraints. These operational requirements are translated into main dimensions, performance criteria, systems and equipment, forming the basis for the vessel’s technical specification.

A one-off vessel normally starts with an operational brief that is developed into a concept design and technical specification. The project then progresses through contract, basic, detail and production design, with key decisions on performance, systems, class requirements and construction developed progressively as the design matures.
