A bulk carrier is a ship built to carry unpackaged dry cargo directly in its holds. It is designed for goods like coal, iron ore, grain, cement, or other raw materials that can be loaded loose, without containers or pallets. The ship’s large box-shaped holds and strong structure make it suitable for heavy or voluminous cargo that pours like sand or gravel.

A dry cargo vessel is any ship that transports solid goods by sea, excluding liquids and gases. This category includes container ships, general cargo ships, bulk carriers, roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessels for vehicles, and refrigerated ships for perishable goods. If it carries non-liquid, non-gaseous cargo, it is considered a dry cargo vessel.
