    Answers to guide your maritime journey

    A ship design consultancy supports owners and shipyards throughout the vessel design process, from concept and contract design to basic and detail design. This includes naval architecture, structural and systems engineering, class documentation and technical coordination with the shipyard. FKAB can support the complete design process or provide specialist engineering for specific parts of a project.

    Ship design typically progresses through concept, contract, basic, detail and production design. Concept design defines the vessel’s main characteristics, while contract design forms the technical basis for the shipbuilding contract. Basic design provides documentation for class and statutory approval. Detail design develops the systems and structures to a buildable level, while production design translates the design into yard-specific fabrication and assembly information.

    Naval architecture is the engineering discipline dealing with a vessel’s hull form, stability, hydrodynamics, performance and other fundamental characteristics. Ship design is broader and combines naval architecture with structural, mechanical, electrical and systems engineering to develop the complete vessel.

    Look for an independent design company with proven experience in the relevant vessel type, a strong track record with classification societies, and experience working with shipyards in the target building region. The company should also have the engineering capability to support the required design stages and coordinate effectively between owner, yard and class.

    Sustainable ship design aims to minimize energy use and emissions throughout the vessel’s operational life. It combines an efficient hull and propulsion system with operational efficiency, fuel flexibility and realistic options for future upgrades or conversion. The goal is to reduce lifecycle emissions while maintaining the vessel’s commercial and operational performance.

    The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is an IMO measure of the energy efficiency of new ships, expressed as CO₂ emissions relative to the vessel’s transport work. New ships covered by EEDI must meet an increasingly stringent required efficiency level depending on ship type and size. Hull efficiency, propulsion, machinery and energy-saving technologies can all contribute to improving a vessel’s EEDI.

    The timeline depends on vessel type, complexity and scope. A concept design typically takes around 4–6 weeks, while contract and basic design generally require several months. Detail and production design may also take several months and are often coordinated with the vessel’s construction schedule.
