FAQ
A product tanker is a tanker designed to transport refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and naphtha. Unlike crude oil tankers, product tankers are typically designed with coated cargo tanks and greater cargo segregation, allowing different products to be carried simultaneously.
Product tanker design combines cargo capacity and segregation requirements with hull, stability, structural, propulsion and machinery design. Cargo tank coatings, pumping and piping arrangements, cargo handling, energy efficiency and applicable class and statutory requirements are key parts of the design.
Sustainable tanker design aims to reduce energy consumption and emissions while maintaining cargo capacity, safety and operational flexibility. This includes an efficient hull and propulsion system, optimized machinery and cargo systems, appropriate fuel flexibility and a design matched to the vessel’s actual operating profile.
Product tankers primarily carry refined petroleum products, while chemical tankers may handle a much wider range of cargoes with different hazards and compatibility requirements. Chemical tanker design therefore typically requires greater cargo segregation, more specialized cargo systems and careful selection of tank coatings or stainless steel according to the intended cargo list.
Low environmental impact tanker design focuses on reducing fuel consumption, emissions and other environmental impacts throughout the vessel’s operation. Measures can include hull and propulsion optimization, energy-efficient machinery, lower-carbon fuels, wind-assisted propulsion and efficient cargo systems, selected according to the vessel’s intended operation.
A tanker design consultant can support a project from early feasibility and concept design through contract, basic and detail design. Typical deliverables include general arrangement, specifications, hull and structural design, stability calculations, cargo and machinery systems, class documentation and technical support during yard selection and construction.
