    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

A bitumen tanker is a specialized tanker designed to transport bitumen or asphalt products at elevated temperatures. The cargo tanks, heating systems, insulation and cargo-handling equipment are designed to maintain the required cargo temperature throughout loading, transport and discharge.

The terms bitumen tanker and asphalt tanker are largely interchangeable and generally describe the same type of specialized heated cargo vessel. “Bitumen” is more commonly used in Europe and many international markets, while “asphalt” is more common in North American terminology.

A sustainable bitumen tanker combines an energy-efficient hull and propulsion system with efficient cargo heating and high-performance tank insulation. Reducing heat losses lowers the energy required to maintain cargo temperature, while waste heat recovery and optimized operating profiles can further reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Energy-saving technologies for bitumen tankers can include improved cargo tank insulation, waste heat recovery for cargo heating, efficient boilers and thermal oil systems, optimized hull and propulsion systems, and alternative or lower-carbon fuels. The most effective combination depends on vessel size, cargo temperature and operating profile.

Bitumen is typically transported at temperatures around 150–180°C, depending on the grade and required viscosity. Cargo tanks are heavily insulated and equipped with heating systems, commonly using thermal oil, to maintain the required temperature throughout the voyage and during discharge.

Bitumen tankers require specialist knowledge of high-temperature cargoes, tank insulation, heating systems, thermal expansion and cargo handling. An experienced designer can integrate these requirements with hull, structural and propulsion design to achieve a safe, efficient and commercially practical vessel.
