FAQ
Marine technical documentation is the collection of drawings, specifications, calculations, manuals and other technical information describing a vessel and its systems. It supports design, construction, class and statutory approval, operation, maintenance and future modifications throughout the vessel’s lifecycle.
The required documentation depends on vessel type, class and flag, but typically includes approved drawings, structural and stability calculations, system documentation, certificates, test records and operating manuals. At delivery, these are supplemented by final as-built documentation reflecting the vessel as actually constructed.
An as-built documentation package contains the final drawings and technical documents updated to reflect the vessel as actually built. Unlike design drawings, it incorporates modifications made during construction and commissioning, providing the owner with an accurate technical reference for operation, maintenance, surveys and future modifications.
Technical documentation is normally produced jointly by the ship designer, shipyard, equipment suppliers and other specialist parties. The designer typically provides design and approval documentation, while the yard develops production and as-built information. Clear responsibility and document coordination are essential to ensure a complete and consistent final package.
Vessel documentation should be updated whenever modifications affect the ship, its systems or approved arrangements. Effective revision control ensures that drawings, manuals and technical records reflect the current vessel configuration. Maintaining an accurate document package is particularly important for class surveys, conversions, maintenance and transfer to a new owner
