Ammonia Carriers

Innovative and energy-efficient Ammonia Carriers, tailored to your needs for sustainable and cost-effective operations

Overview

Delivering excellence in Ammonia Carrier vessel design

As society transitions to reduce carbon emissions, FKAB contributes to the shift by designing innovative ammonia carriers. Ammonia plays a key role in global decarbonization as both an industrial feedstock and a clean energy carrier. These vessels require specialized cargo systems, cryogenic storage, and advanced safety solutions to handle hazardous and low-temperature cargoes. Our designs focus on energy efficiency, sustainability, and future-proof solutions that support the green transition. Additionally, we offer flexible designs that can be adapted to carry other cargoes, providing owners with greater versatility and operational opportunities.

    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

Ammonia carrier design combines gas carrier engineering with the specific requirements of ammonia as a toxic cargo. The design covers cargo containment and handling, materials, stability, structures, machinery and safety systems, together with class and IGC Code requirements. Vessel size and cargo conditions are optimized for the intended transport chain.

An ammonia carrier is a gas carrier designed to transport liquefied ammonia (NH₃) in bulk. Ammonia is transported either refrigerated or under pressure, depending on vessel size and cargo system, and requires specific materials and safety measures due to its toxicity and chemical properties.

Ammonia can be transported as a liquid by refrigeration, pressure or a combination of both. Fully refrigerated ammonia is typically carried at approximately −33°C near atmospheric pressure, while pressurized or semi-refrigerated systems use higher pressure and temperature. The appropriate solution depends on vessel size, trade and cargo system.

Ammonia carriers are subject to the IMO IGC Code requirements for ships carrying liquefied gases in bulk. Because ammonia is toxic, the design must address cargo containment, material compatibility, leak and gas detection, ventilation, emergency shutdown, crew protection and other safety measures appropriate to the cargo.

Yes. FKAB can provide ship design and engineering support for Canadian owners developing ammonia carrier newbuild projects. The scope can range from early concept and feasibility work through contract and basic design, with the vessel developed to meet applicable class, flag and Canadian regulatory requirements.
