FAQ
Common ferry types include passenger ferries, vehicle and car ferries, RoPax ferries carrying both passengers and vehicles, high-speed ferries and double-ended ferries designed for short routes. The appropriate type depends on route length, passenger and vehicle capacity, speed, harbour infrastructure and operating conditions.
Ferry design starts with the route, required passenger and vehicle capacity, operating speed and terminal constraints. These requirements determine the hull, stability, propulsion, vehicle deck arrangements, passenger spaces and safety systems. The design must also address efficient turnaround, accessibility, evacuation and applicable class and statutory requirements.
Passenger safety is integrated into ferry design through damage stability, fire protection, safe evacuation routes and lifesaving arrangements. The vessel layout must allow passengers and crew to reach safe areas and evacuation stations efficiently, while meeting applicable class, flag and SOLAS requirements.
Modern ferries can use conventional diesel or dual-fuel propulsion, diesel-electric systems, battery-electric propulsion or hybrid combinations. Shore power can further reduce emissions while alongside. The optimal solution depends on route length, speed, operating profile, charging infrastructure and required redundancy.
Ferries operating in ice and cold climates require hull structures, propulsion systems and equipment adapted to the expected ice conditions and temperatures. Depending on the route, this can include ice strengthening, suitable propellers and rudders, winterization of exposed equipment and systems designed to remain operational at low temperatures.
