LNG bunkering vessels

Innovative and energy-efficient LNG Bunker vessels, tailored to your needs for sustainable, cost-effective and efficient operations.

Overview

Delivering excellence in LNG Bunkering vessel design

At FKAB, we specialize in designing state of the art LNG bunkering vessels, meeting the growing demand for cleaner marine fuels. Unlike conventional LNG carriers, bunkering vessels are designed for flexible and precise LNG transfer, ensuring safe and efficient refueling of various ship types. These vessels require advanced cryogenic systems, high-precision cargo handling, and robust safety features to comply with stringent environmental and operational standards. By optimizing energy efficiency, FKAB delivers LNG bunkering vessels that enhance fuel logistics, operational reliability, and sustainability for the vessel.

    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

An LNG bunkering vessel is a specialized vessel that supplies liquefied natural gas (LNG/BLNG) as fuel to other ships. It carries LNG in insulated cargo tanks and is equipped with dedicated transfer, pressure-control and safety systems for ship-to-ship bunkering.

LNG bunkering vessel design combines gas carrier requirements with the operational demands of ship-to-ship fuel transfer. The design covers cargo containment, LNG transfer and boil-off gas management, hull and stability, propulsion, manoeuvrability and safety systems, as well as compatibility with the receiving vessels and ports.

Boil-off gas is generated as heat enters the LNG cargo and part of the liquid evaporates. Depending on the vessel and cargo system, it can be used as fuel, returned during cargo transfer or reliquefied and returned to the cargo tanks. The selected solution is designed to control tank pressure while minimizing unnecessary venting.

Yes. LNG bunkering vessels can be designed for Canadian operating conditions, taking into account applicable Canadian regulations, port infrastructure, transfer requirements, cold-climate operation and, where relevant, ice-class requirements.

LNG transfer requires dedicated safety systems including emergency shutdown (ESD), gas and leak detection, fire protection and controlled safety zones. Transfer systems must also provide safe isolation and disconnection, with arrangements adapted to the vessels, transfer equipment and applicable regulations.
