FAQ
Chemical tanker design combines cargo flexibility with strict safety, segregation and material requirements. The design covers cargo tanks and handling systems, coatings or stainless steel selection, hull and structural design, stability, propulsion and machinery, together with applicable class, IBC Code and statutory requirements.
A sustainable chemical tanker combines energy-efficient hull and propulsion design with cargo systems optimized for the vessel’s intended trade. Efficient heating, pumping and tank-cleaning systems can reduce energy and water use, while fuel flexibility and other energy-saving technologies can further reduce lifecycle emissions.
Stainless steel cargo tanks provide high corrosion resistance and can carry a wider range of aggressive or high-purity chemical cargoes than many coated tanks. Their smooth, durable surfaces also facilitate effective tank cleaning and reduce the risk of cargo contamination between voyages.
A tanker design consultant develops the vessel around its intended cargo list, capacity and operating profile. The work can include concept and contract design, cargo arrangements, stability, structures and systems, followed by basic design and class approval support and, where required, detail design and technical coordination with the shipyard.
Stainless steel tanks are typically selected for aggressive, high-purity or contamination-sensitive chemicals that are unsuitable for conventional tank coatings. The requirement depends on the specific cargo, tank material or coating compatibility and previous-cargo restrictions, so the intended cargo list should be established early in the design.
