CO2 Carriers

Innovative and energy-efficient CO2 Carriers, tailored to your needs for sustainable and cost-effective operations

Overview

Delivering excellence in CO2 Carrier vessel design

As the world accelerates efforts to reduce carbon emissions, FKAB plays a vital role by developing innovative CO₂ carriers. Efficient transport and storage of CO₂ are essential for enabling large-scale Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS), a key technology in global decarbonization. Designing vessels for such demanding operations requires advanced cargo systems, cryogenic storage, and robust safety solutions to handle demanding conditions. At FKAB, we prioritize energy efficiency, sustainability, and reliable solutions that align with the green transition. Furthermore, we offer adaptable designs capable of accommodating various cargoes, enhancing operational flexibility and commercial opportunities for our clients.

    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

A CO₂ carrier is a vessel designed to transport captured carbon dioxide in liquid form between capture, storage or utilization sites. The CO₂ is transported under controlled pressure and temperature, requiring specialized cargo tanks, piping, handling and safety systems.

CO₂ is transported by ship in liquid form under controlled pressure and low temperature. The exact pressure and temperature depend on the selected cargo containment concept and transport chain. Unlike conventional LPG, liquid CO₂ has different thermodynamic properties that require dedicated tank, pressure-control and cargo-handling solutions.

CO₂ carrier design includes cargo containment and handling systems, hull and structural design, stability, propulsion, machinery and safety systems. Particular attention is given to cargo pressure and temperature, loading and unloading arrangements, and integration with the terminals and infrastructure forming the complete CCS transport chain.

CO₂ carriers provide the transport link between locations where CO₂ is captured and sites where it is permanently stored or further processed. Shipping provides flexibility where pipelines are impractical and can connect multiple capture sites and storage locations as a CCS network develops.

Current CO₂ carrier projects range from small vessels of a few thousand cubic metres to concepts and projects for significantly larger capacities. Vessel size depends on transport distance, annual CO₂ volume, terminal infrastructure and storage logistics, and the market is developing towards larger-scale solutions as CCS networks expand.
