    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

A dredger is a specialized vessel designed to remove, transport or relocate material from the seabed. Dredgers are used for activities such as maintaining navigation channels and ports, deepening waterways, land reclamation and marine construction.

The main types include trailing suction hopper dredgers, which collect and transport material in an onboard hopper; cutter suction dredgers, which excavate and pump material through pipelines; and backhoe dredgers, which use an excavator for precise removal of harder seabed material.

Dredger design combines conventional naval architecture with specialized dredging equipment and operational requirements. The design must integrate hull form, stability, propulsion, power generation, dredging systems, hopper capacity and discharge arrangements according to the material, water depth and intended operating area.

On hopper dredgers, dredged material is stored temporarily in an onboard hopper. Depending on the project and vessel, it can be discharged through bottom doors, pumped ashore through a pipeline or discharged by rainbowing. The appropriate method depends on the material and how and where it will be reused or disposed of.

Dredgers are designed around their specific operating profile, often requiring shallow draught, good manoeuvrability and sufficient propulsion and auxiliary power for dredging equipment. Depending on the dredging method, station-keeping capability, bow thrusters or dynamic positioning may also be important.
