FAQ
A chemical tanker is a tanker designed to transport liquid chemicals in bulk. Its cargo tanks, materials, coatings, piping and safety systems are selected according to the intended cargoes and the requirements of the IBC Code. Chemical tankers are categorized as IMO Type 1, 2 or 3 according to the hazards of the cargoes they are designed to carry.
Stainless steel provides high corrosion resistance and allows chemical tankers to carry many aggressive, high-purity or contamination-sensitive cargoes that are unsuitable for conventional coated tanks. Its durable, smooth surface also facilitates efficient tank cleaning and can provide greater flexibility between different cargoes.
SS tanker means stainless steel tanker, typically referring to a chemical tanker with stainless steel cargo tanks. Stainless steel provides high corrosion resistance and allows the vessel to carry a broad range of demanding chemical cargoes.
IMO Type 1, 2 and 3 are ship types defined by the IBC Code according to the hazards of the chemical cargoes carried. Type 1 provides the highest level of containment and protection for cargoes presenting the greatest hazards, Type 2 an intermediate level, and Type 3 the least stringent of the three.
A sustainable chemical tanker combines an energy-efficient hull and propulsion system with cargo systems optimized for the vessel’s actual trading pattern. Efficient cargo heating, pumping and tank-cleaning systems can reduce energy and water consumption, while fuel flexibility, waste heat recovery and wind-assisted propulsion can further reduce emissions.
Stainless steel tanks are typically required or preferred for corrosive, high-purity or contamination-sensitive cargoes that are incompatible with conventional tank coatings. This can include certain acids, aggressive chemicals and high-purity products. The appropriate tank material depends on the specific cargo, required purity, coating compatibility and previous-cargo restrictions.
