    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

In commercial shipping, MPV stands for Multi-Purpose Vessel, a vessel designed to carry different types of cargo and support a wider range of transport requirements than a vessel optimized for a single cargo type.

A multi-purpose vessel (MPV) is a flexible cargo vessel designed to carry different types of cargo, such as breakbulk, project cargo, containers and heavy or oversized units. Its cargo holds, hatch openings, deck strength and cargo-handling equipment are designed around the intended cargo mix and trades.

A multi-purpose vessel is designed for flexibility across several cargoes or operations, while a special purpose vessel is optimized around a specific mission or operational requirement. An MPV therefore prioritizes versatility, whereas a special purpose vessel is developed around the performance and equipment needed for its particular task.

Depending on its design, a multi-purpose vessel can carry breakbulk, project cargo, containers, steel products, machinery and heavy or oversized cargo. Cargo flexibility depends on factors such as hold dimensions, hatch openings, deck and tank-top strength, securing arrangements and onboard lifting capacity.

Special purpose vessel design starts by defining the vessel’s mission, operating environment, payload, equipment and performance requirements. These are translated into main dimensions, general arrangement and technical systems before the project progresses through concept, contract, basic and detail design and the applicable class and statutory approval process.

A multi-purpose offshore vessel is designed to perform several offshore support tasks rather than a single dedicated operation. Depending on its mission, it can include large working decks, offshore cranes, accommodation, subsea equipment, ROV systems and dynamic positioning.’
