    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

An LPG carrier is a gas carrier designed to transport liquefied petroleum gases, primarily propane and butane, as well as other compatible liquefied gases depending on the vessel design. Cargo is maintained in liquid form through pressure, refrigeration or a combination of both.

Pressurised LPG carriers keep the cargo liquid under pressure, typically without refrigeration, and are generally used for smaller parcels and regional trades. Semi-refrigerated carriers combine pressure and refrigeration, providing greater cargo flexibility and capacity. Fully refrigerated carriers transport large cargo volumes at low temperature and near-atmospheric pressure and are typically used for larger-scale and deep-sea trades.

VLGC stands for Very Large Gas Carrier, a large gas carrier primarily used for long-distance transportation of LPG, particularly propane and butane. Modern VLGCs are typically around 80,000–100,000 m³ in cargo capacity.

Depending on its design and certification, an LPG carrier can transport propane, butane and mixtures of these gases, as well as certain petrochemical gases such as propylene and butadiene. Some LPG carriers can also carry ammonia, provided that tanks, materials, piping and cargo systems are suitable for ammonia service.

LPG and ammonia carriers can use similar cargo containment concepts, but ammonia requires specific material and safety considerations because of its toxicity and chemical properties. Copper and copper alloys are unsuitable for ammonia service, while cargo piping, valves, gas detection, ventilation and crew protection must be designed accordingly.

LPG carrier design consultancy can cover feasibility and concept development, contract, basic and detail design, including naval architecture, cargo containment and handling, structures, stability, propulsion, machinery and safety systems. The scope can also include class approval support and technical coordination with the owner, yard and equipment suppliers.
