    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

LNG and LPG tankers are both designed to transport liquefied gases, but they differ in cargo type and tank design. A liquefied natural gas tanker (LNG tanker) carries methane cooled to about –162°C, requiring heavily insulated cryogenic tanks. An LPG carrier transports propane and butane at higher temperatures and moderate pressure. Compared to a product tanker, both LNG and LPG carriers have specialized containment and safety systems to handle their specific cargo conditions.

An LNG tanker transports liquefied natural gas at around –162°C using insulated cryogenic tanks that keep the cargo in liquid form. The liquefied natural gas tanker design includes systems for pressure control, gas handling, and reliquefaction to manage boil-off gas. LNG bunkering vessels operate on the same principles, transferring LNG safely to other ships or terminals through dedicated LNG bunkering systems.

The two main liquefied natural gas tanker designs are the membrane type and the Moss type (spherical tanks). The membrane LNG tanker design uses thin stainless-steel barriers supported by insulation, allowing higher cargo capacity and lower weight. The Moss type uses independent spherical tanks that provide robust safety and reliability. Compared to a product tanker, both LNG ship designs are highly specialized for cryogenic cargo handling and insulation.

LPG tankers are classified by their cargo containment and pressure systems. The main LPG carrier designs are fully pressurized, semi-refrigerated, and fully refrigerated. Fully pressurized LPG carriers transport cargo at ambient temperature and high pressure, while refrigerated types use cooling systems for greater capacity. Compared to a product tanker or LNG tanker, an LPG carrier design includes specialized tanks and safety systems for handling liquefied petroleum gases.

LNG bunkering is the process of supplying liquefied natural gas as fuel to ships. LNG bunkering vessels are specialized ships designed to store, transport, and transfer LNG safely to other vessels or terminals. Based on liquefied natural gas tanker design principles, these vessels feature insulated cryogenic tanks, gas handling systems, and advanced safety controls to ensure efficient and secure LNG bunkering operations.
