    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

An LNG bunkering vessel is a specialized vessel that transports LNG and delivers it as fuel to other ships. It combines LNG cargo containment and handling systems with dedicated transfer, pressure-control, boil-off gas management and safety systems for ship-to-ship bunkering.

An LNG bunker vessel is generally self-propelled and can operate independently between LNG terminals and receiving ships. An LNG bunker barge may be non-self-propelled and rely on tugs or other port infrastructure, making it primarily suited to local operations. Terminology and configurations can vary between markets.

During ship-to-ship LNG bunkering, the bunker vessel moors alongside the receiving vessel and the transfer systems are connected. After safety checks and cool-down, LNG is transferred under controlled pressure and flow, with vapour managed as required. Once bunkering is complete, the transfer system is drained, purged and safely disconnected.

LNG bunkering requires dedicated transfer hoses or loading arms, manifolds, piping and valves, emergency shutdown (ESD) systems, gas and leak detection, and appropriate fire protection. Depending on the system, vapour return, custody-transfer metering and emergency release or dry-disconnect arrangements may also be included.

LNG bunkering system design covers cargo tank selection, transfer capacity, piping and manifolds, pressure control, boil-off gas management, vapour return and safety systems. The design must also consider compatibility with receiving vessels, terminal interfaces and applicable class and statutory requirements.

LNG bunkering vessels range from small units with a few thousand cubic metres of LNG capacity to larger vessels exceeding 10,000 m³. The appropriate capacity depends on bunker parcel size, receiving vessels, port infrastructure, operating range and expected bunker demand.
