    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

How long does a typical ship design project take and what affects cost?

The duration of a ship design project depends on the vessel type, complexity, and project scope. A concept design may take 5-6 weeks, while a complete basic and detailed design can take several months.

The cost is mainly influenced by the size of the vessel, level of detail required, and technical systems involved. Working with an experienced ship design company or maritime consultant ensures efficient planning, accurate documentation, and optimized total cost.

Dredger ship design focuses on vessels built to remove sediment or maintain water depth in ports, rivers, and channels. These special purpose vessels are engineered for efficiency, stability, and reliable dredging performance.

    Main types include:

    • Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers (TSHD) – collect material while sailing
    • Cutter Suction Dredgers (CSD) – use a rotating cutter head while stationary
    • Split Hopper Dredgers – carry dredged material in hoppers that split open for quick discharge
    • Backhoe and Grab Dredgers – use excavators or cranes for precise operations in confined areas
    • Dredging Barges – transport dredged material or support other dredging units

A ship design company experienced in special purpose vessel design ensures the right configuration for the dredging method, capacity, and operational requirements.

We have experience designing ice-class vessels for all ice classes and can optimize our designs to perform even under extreme conditions.

A Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) is designed to remove compacted soil or clay by cutting and pumping material through a suction pipe. Key design features include:

    • A rotating cutter head mounted on a ladder for controlled soil removal
    • Powerful dredge pumps for transporting the mixture of water and soil
    • Spuds and side anchors for positioning and steady operation
    • A robust hull and deck layout for stability and easy maintenance

In dredger ship design, efficiency, maneuverability, and pump capacity are carefully balanced to ensure optimal performance and low operating costs.

Hopper dredger design and cutter suction dredger design differ mainly in how material is collected, transported, and discharged.

A Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) sails while dredging, using suction pipes to pump material into onboard hoppers. Once full, the vessel transports the material to a disposal site and releases it through bottom doors or split hulls.

A Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD), on the other hand, is stationary during operation. It uses a rotating cutter head to loosen soil and pumps the mixture through floating pipelines directly to shore or barges.

In short, hopper dredgers are self-propelled and mobile, while cutter suction dredgers are fixed and rely on pipeline discharge.

Backhoe dredger design focuses on stability, reach, and precision for operations in shallow or confined waters. These dredgers use an excavator mounted on a pontoon to remove material directly from the seabed.

    Key design considerations include:

    • Stable hull and spud arrangement for accurate digging
    • Optimized excavator position for maximum reach and visibility
    • Low draught and compact dimensions for port and nearshore work
    • Efficient barge interface for smooth material handling
    • Assisted propulsion or thrusters for improved maneuverability and positioning

In dredger ship design, backhoe dredgers are valued for their accuracy, versatility, and ability to operate where larger suction dredgers cannot.
