FAQ
A product tanker is a tanker designed to transport refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and naphtha. Product tankers typically have coated cargo tanks and multiple segregations, allowing different cargo grades to be carried simultaneously. They differ from crude oil tankers, which are primarily designed for larger volumes of crude oil.
Product tankers carry refined petroleum products and normally have coated cargo tanks, more cargo segregations and cargo systems designed to handle several grades simultaneously. Crude oil tankers primarily carry crude oil in larger parcels and generally have simpler cargo segregation. Product tankers are also typically smaller than large crude carriers.
“Coated” means that the steel surfaces of the cargo tanks are protected by a cargo-compatible coating, commonly epoxy, zinc silicate or specialized systems such as Marineline. The coating protects against corrosion and allows carriage of compatible products and chemicals. More aggressive or purity-sensitive cargoes may require stainless steel tanks instead.
A coated product tanker can carry refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and naphtha, as well as certain chemicals and biofuels depending on the coating and vessel certification. Cargo compatibility, previous-cargo restrictions and cleaning requirements determine which cargoes and cargo sequences are acceptable.
A sustainable product tanker combines an energy-efficient hull and propulsion system with cargo and machinery systems optimized for its actual operating profile. Fuel flexibility, wind-assisted propulsion, waste heat recovery and other energy-saving technologies can further reduce emissions, while efficient cargo handling and tank cleaning can reduce energy and resource use.
FKAB designs product and chemical tankers across several size segments, including Handysize and MR vessels, with designs developed around the required cargo capacity, trade and port restrictions. The optimal size depends on factors such as parcel size, cargo segregation, route, draught limitations and terminal infrastructure.
