CO2 Carriers

Innovative and energy-efficient CO2 Carriers, tailored to your needs for sustainable and cost-effective operations

Overview

Delivering excellence in CO2 Carrier vessel design

As the world accelerates efforts to reduce carbon emissions, FKAB plays a vital role by developing innovative CO₂ carriers. Efficient transport and storage of CO₂ are essential for enabling large-scale Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS), a key technology in global decarbonization. Designing vessels for such demanding operations requires advanced cargo systems, cryogenic storage, and robust safety solutions to handle demanding conditions. At FKAB, we prioritize energy efficiency, sustainability, and reliable solutions that align with the green transition. Furthermore, we offer adaptable designs capable of accommodating various cargoes, enhancing operational flexibility and commercial opportunities for our clients.

    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

A CO₂ carrier is a ship designed to transport liquefied carbon dioxide for carbon capture and storage (CCS) or industrial reuse.

CO₂ carrier ship design focuses on safe containment under high pressure and low temperature, using insulated cargo tanks, reliable refrigeration systems, and gas-handling safety features.

Ammonia carrier ship design focuses on safety, containment, and environmental performance. Key considerations include:

    • Cargo tank type and materials suited for toxic, cryogenic ammonia
    • Ventilation and gas detection systems for crew safety
    • Reliquefaction and pressure control to manage boil-off gas
    • Corrosion-resistant piping and coatings

CO₂ and ammonia carriers differ from conventional oil or product tankers mainly in cargo handling and containment systems.

They transport pressurized or refrigerated gases, requiring specialized cargo tanks, insulation, and reliquefaction systems to maintain temperature and pressure. Safety features like gas detection, ventilation, and double barriers are essential.

CO₂ and ammonia carriers must comply with strict IMO gas carrier codes and class society rules to ensure safe handling of pressurized and refrigerated cargo.

Key regulations include the IGC Code for gas carriers and the CO₂ Transport Guidelines under development for carbon capture projects.

Designs must include gas detection, ventilation, pressure relief, and emergency shutdown systems, ensuring safety for crew, cargo, and environment.

Conversion of existing tankers to carry CO₂ or ammonia is possible but technically complex.

It requires major modifications to cargo containment, piping, ventilation, and safety systems to handle pressurized or cryogenic cargo. Structural reinforcement, insulation, and material upgrades are often necessary to meet IGC Code and class requirements.

Such conversions can be cost-effective for demonstration projects, but purpose-built CO₂ and ammonia carriers usually offer better efficiency and long-term safety.
