    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

A bitumen carrier is a specialized vessel designed to transport heated bitumen or asphalt. Unlike a product tanker, which carries refined oil products at ambient temperature, a bitumen carrier features thermal oil heating systems, insulated cargo tanks, and temperature control to keep the cargo in liquid form. While both share similar hull and machinery layouts, the cargo system of a bitumen carrier is tailored for high-viscosity and heat-sensitive materials.

A bitumen carrier is designed to transport high-temperature cargo such as asphalt or bitumen. Key design features include thermal oil heating systems that maintain cargo temperatures up to 250°C, insulated cargo tanks to minimize heat loss, and special internal coatings that protect against corrosion and facilitate cleaning. These features ensure safe, efficient, and reliable transport of heated bitumen products.

Bitumen is loaded, transported, and discharged in a heated state to keep the cargo liquid, unlike on a product tanker where cargo is handled at ambient temperature. A bitumen carrier uses thermal oil heating systems, insulated tanks, and heated cargo lines and pumps to maintain temperatures up to 250°C. This ensures safe and efficient handling of the high-viscosity bitumen cargo throughout the voyage.

Yes, a product tanker can be converted to carry bitumen, but it requires significant modifications. The conversion involves installing thermal oil heating systems, insulating the cargo tanks, and applying specialized internal coatings to handle high-temperature cargo. These upgrades transform a standard product tanker into a vessel capable of safely transporting heated bitumen or asphalt.

Bitumen carriers are equipped with specialized safety and heating systems that differ from standard product tankers. They use thermal oil heating to maintain cargo temperatures up to 250°C, fully insulated tanks to minimize heat loss, and high-temperature resistant coatings to protect tank integrity. Additional safety systems control temperature and pressure to ensure safe handling of hot bitumen cargo during loading, transport, and discharge.
