Ammonia Carriers

Innovative and energy-efficient Ammonia Carriers, tailored to your needs for sustainable and cost-effective operations

Overview

Delivering excellence in Ammonia Carrier vessel design

As society transitions to reduce carbon emissions, FKAB contributes to the shift by designing innovative ammonia carriers. Ammonia plays a key role in global decarbonization as both an industrial feedstock and a clean energy carrier. These vessels require specialized cargo systems, cryogenic storage, and advanced safety solutions to handle hazardous and low-temperature cargoes. Our designs focus on energy efficiency, sustainability, and future-proof solutions that support the green transition. Additionally, we offer flexible designs that can be adapted to carry other cargoes, providing owners with greater versatility and operational opportunities.

    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

An ammonia carrier is a gas carrier designed to transport liquefied ammonia (NH₃) in bulk. Ammonia can be carried refrigerated, pressurised or under a combination of pressure and refrigeration. The vessel is closely related to an LPG carrier but requires specific consideration of ammonia’s toxicity and material compatibility.

Ammonia can be transported fully refrigerated at approximately −33°C near atmospheric pressure, pressurised at higher temperatures, or semi-refrigerated using a combination of pressure and cooling. Fully refrigerated systems are generally suited to larger cargo volumes, while pressurised and semi-refrigerated solutions provide flexibility for smaller vessels and regional trades.

Ammonia and LPG can use similar gas carrier concepts, but ammonia requires additional consideration because of its toxicity and material compatibility. Copper, copper alloys and certain other materials are unsuitable for ammonia service, while gas detection, ventilation, containment and crew protection must be specifically designed for ammonia.

Ammonia carriers require safety systems addressing its toxicity as well as other cargo hazards. These include gas and leak detection, emergency shutdown, ventilation, water spray systems, suitable refuge arrangements and dedicated crew protective equipment, together with the requirements of the IGC Code, class and flag.

In some cases, an existing LPG carrier can be converted to carry ammonia, but a technical feasibility study is required. Cargo tanks, materials, piping, valves, cargo handling, ventilation and safety systems must be assessed for ammonia compatibility. Where extensive modifications are required, or the vessel has limited remaining lifetime, a newbuild may be more commercially attractive.
