    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

A purpose-built multipurpose vessel is designed around a specific combination of cargoes and operations rather than adapting a standard vessel platform. Cargo holds, deck strength, cranes, hatch arrangements and other systems can be optimized for project cargo, breakbulk, containers or other intended cargoes.

In commercial shipping, MPV stands for Multi-Purpose Vessel, a vessel designed to carry several types of cargo such as breakbulk, project cargo, containers and, depending on the design, heavy-lift cargo.

Multipurpose vessels can carry a combination of breakbulk, project cargo, containers and heavy or oversized units. Depending on the design, they can also accommodate steel products, machinery and other specialized cargoes. Hold dimensions, deck strength, hatch openings and lifting capacity are optimized around the intended cargo mix.

The choice depends on cargo commitments, required vessel features, utilization and investment horizon. Chartering provides flexibility and lower initial investment, while a purpose-built vessel can be optimized for recurring cargoes, routes and operational requirements. A feasibility study can compare the technical and commercial advantages of each option.

FKAB can support multipurpose vessel projects from feasibility and concept development through contract, basic and detail design. The scope can include cargo arrangements, hull and structural design, stability, propulsion and machinery systems, class documentation and technical coordination with the shipyard.
