FAQ
An LNG carrier is a specialized gas carrier designed to transport liquefied natural gas at approximately −162°C. LNG is carried in highly insulated cargo tanks, with boil-off gas managed through use as fuel, reliquefaction or other pressure-control arrangements depending on the vessel and cargo system.
LNG is stored in highly insulated cargo tanks that minimize heat transfer from the surroundings. Some heat ingress is unavoidable, causing part of the LNG to evaporate as boil-off gas. Depending on the vessel and cargo system, the boil-off gas can be used as fuel or reliquefied and returned to the cargo tanks.
An efficient LNG carrier combines an optimized hull and propulsion system with effective management of boil-off gas and onboard energy demand. Modern propulsion systems can use boil-off gas as fuel, while reliquefaction, waste heat recovery and other energy-saving technologies may further improve overall efficiency depending on the vessel.
The main LNG cargo containment concepts include membrane systems, where the insulated containment system is integrated with the ship structure, and independent tanks such as Moss spherical tanks. The selected system influences cargo capacity, vessel arrangement, construction and operational characteristics.
An LPG carrier is a gas carrier designed to transport liquefied petroleum gases such as propane and butane, as well as other compatible liquefied gases depending on the vessel design. The cargo is maintained in liquid form through pressure, refrigeration or a combination of both.
LPG carriers are generally divided into fully pressurized, semi-refrigerated and fully refrigerated vessels. Pressurized ships are typically used for smaller parcels and regional trades, while fully refrigerated vessels are suited to larger cargo volumes and deep-sea transportation.
FKAB provides concept, contract, basic and detail design for gas carrier projects, including LNG, LPG, ammonia and CO₂ carriers and bunkering vessels. Services include naval architecture, cargo and machinery systems, structural design, stability, class documentation and technical support throughout the project.
LPG is kept liquid by pressure, refrigeration or a combination of both. Fully pressurized vessels maintain the cargo at ambient temperature under pressure, while refrigerated vessels reduce the cargo temperature to lower the required storage pressure. Semi-refrigerated systems combine both principles.
