FAQ
A coated product tanker has cargo tanks protected by specialized coatings, commonly epoxy or zinc silicate, to prevent corrosion and maintain cargo quality. Coated tanks allow the vessel to carry a range of refined petroleum products and other compatible cargoes without requiring stainless steel tanks.
A tanker design consultancy supports owners and shipyards from early feasibility and concept development through contract, basic and detail design. The work can include cargo arrangements, hull and structural design, stability, propulsion and machinery systems, class documentation and technical support during yard selection and construction.
Fuel-efficient tanker design starts with matching the hull form, propulsion system and machinery to the vessel’s actual operating profile. Further improvements can come from optimized propellers and rudders, energy-saving devices, waste heat recovery, wind-assisted propulsion and efficient cargo systems.
Sustainable tanker design aims to minimize energy use and emissions while maintaining cargo capacity, safety and operational flexibility. It combines efficient hull and propulsion design with optimized machinery and cargo systems, fuel flexibility and realistic preparation for future technologies or conversions.
Common cargo tank coatings include epoxy-based systems, zinc silicate coatings and specialized products such as Marineline. The coating is selected according to the intended cargoes and provides corrosion protection, cargo compatibility and ease of cleaning. For more demanding or contamination-sensitive cargoes, stainless steel tanks may be required instead.
FKAB provides concept, contract, basic and detail design for gas carrier projects, including LNG, LPG, ammonia and CO₂ carriers and bunkering vessels. Services include naval architecture, cargo and machinery systems, structural design, stability, class documentation and technical support throughout the project.
