CO2 Carriers
Innovative and energy-efficient CO2 Carriers, tailored to your needs for sustainable and cost-effective operations
Overview
As the world accelerates efforts to reduce carbon emissions, FKAB plays a vital role by developing innovative CO₂ carriers. Efficient transport and storage of CO₂ are essential for enabling large-scale Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS), a key technology in global decarbonization. Designing vessels for such demanding operations requires advanced cargo systems, cryogenic storage, and robust safety solutions to handle demanding conditions. At FKAB, we prioritize energy efficiency, sustainability, and reliable solutions that align with the green transition. Furthermore, we offer adaptable designs capable of accommodating various cargoes, enhancing operational flexibility and commercial opportunities for our clients.

FAQ
A CO₂ carrier is a specialized vessel designed to transport captured carbon dioxide in liquid form between capture, storage or utilization sites. The cargo is maintained within a controlled pressure and temperature range using dedicated tanks, cargo handling and pressure-control systems.
Liquefied CO₂ is maintained within a controlled pressure and temperature range throughout transport. Insulated cargo tanks, pressure control and, depending on the cargo concept, refrigeration or reliquefaction systems are used to manage heat ingress and keep the CO₂ within its required transport condition.
CO₂ and LPG carriers both transport liquefied gases, but their cargo properties and transport conditions differ significantly. Liquid CO₂ requires dedicated pressure and temperature control and has a relatively narrow operating envelope, resulting in different tank, cargo handling and pressure-control requirements compared with conventional LPG carriers.
CO₂ carriers can connect industrial capture sites with offshore or regional storage locations where pipelines are impractical or not yet available. Shipping also allows CO₂ from several capture sites to be consolidated and transported within developing CCS networks across Asia.
CO₂ carriers must comply with applicable statutory requirements and the rules of the selected classification society for liquefied gas cargoes and their containment systems. Additional class notations may apply depending on cargo conditions, propulsion, redundancy and other vessel features.
