    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

A bitumen tanker is a specialized tanker designed to transport bitumen or asphalt products at elevated temperatures. Its cargo tanks, insulation, heating systems and cargo-handling equipment are designed to maintain the required temperature during loading, transport and discharge.

A bitumen, asphalt or pitch tanker is a specialized vessel designed to transport high-viscosity products at elevated temperatures. The cargo tanks are heavily insulated and equipped with heating systems to maintain the required temperature and viscosity during loading, transport and discharge.

Bitumen is typically transported at around 150–180°C, depending on the grade and required viscosity. Highly insulated cargo tanks reduce heat loss, while heating systems, commonly using thermal oil, maintain the required cargo temperature throughout the voyage and during discharge.

Fuel-efficient bitumen tanker design combines an optimized hull and propulsion system with efficient cargo heating and high-performance tank insulation. Minimizing heat loss reduces the energy required to maintain cargo temperature, while waste heat recovery can use otherwise lost engine heat for cargo heating.

Technologies that can reduce emissions from bitumen tankers include improved cargo tank insulation, waste heat recovery for cargo heating, efficient thermal oil systems, optimized hull and propulsion design and lower-carbon propulsion options. The best combination depends on cargo temperature, vessel size and operating profile.
