Ammonia Carriers
Innovative and energy-efficient Ammonia Carriers, tailored to your needs for sustainable and cost-effective operations
Overview
As society transitions to reduce carbon emissions, FKAB contributes to the shift by designing innovative ammonia carriers. Ammonia plays a key role in global decarbonization as both an industrial feedstock and a clean energy carrier. These vessels require specialized cargo systems, cryogenic storage, and advanced safety solutions to handle hazardous and low-temperature cargoes. Our designs focus on energy efficiency, sustainability, and future-proof solutions that support the green transition. Additionally, we offer flexible designs that can be adapted to carry other cargoes, providing owners with greater versatility and operational opportunities.
OUR PROCESS
Our proven design process ensures every vessel meets the highest standards of quality, functionality and sustainability.
1
Evaluating design possibilities and operational needs with technical analysis.
2
Collaborating to understand your unique requirements and define the vessel’s purpose and capabilities
3

FAQ
Ammonia carrier design covers cargo containment and handling, material compatibility, hull and structural design, stability, propulsion, machinery and safety systems. The design must integrate the specific toxicity and cargo properties of ammonia with IGC Code, class and statutory requirements.
Ammonia and LPG can use similar gas carrier concepts, but ammonia requires additional consideration because of its toxicity and material compatibility. Copper, copper alloys and certain other materials are unsuitable for ammonia service, while gas detection, ventilation, containment and crew protection must be designed specifically for ammonia.
Ammonia can be kept liquid by refrigeration, pressure or a combination of both. Fully refrigerated ammonia is typically transported at approximately −33°C near atmospheric pressure, while pressurized and semi-refrigerated systems operate at higher pressures and temperatures.
Ammonia cargo systems require measures addressing its toxicity as well as other cargo hazards. These include gas and leak detection, ventilation, emergency shutdown, water spray systems, appropriate material selection and dedicated crew protection, in accordance with the IGC Code and applicable class and statutory requirements.
