FKAB Designs Largest Pilot Vessels

he pilot boats will be 28 metres long and will be used in the Western inlet of the Kiel channel. It is the State German maritime authority, the Wasser-und Schifffahrtsverwaltung des Bundes, who ordered the ships.

FKAB has been commissioned by Dockstavarvet in Sweden, which also will build these two vessels.

The project includes:

  • Class drawings
  • 3D model hull and deckhouses
  • Production drawings for hull and deckhouses
  • Strength calculation
  • Stability documents

The pilot vessels will be stationed at Brunsbüttel and operate in the Elbe river, waters well known for very difficult sea conditions in onshore winds and outgoing tidal currents of up to 6 knots”. The German Maritime Authority has specified a weight over 100 tons and thereby these ships will be amongst the largest pilot vessels built in modern times.

The ships will make a speed of 14 knots and are equipped with main engines of 850 kW.
