FAQ
A ship conversion project involves modifying an existing vessel to change its purpose, capacity, or efficiency. The process typically includes feasibility studies, naval architecture and engineering design, updated vessel stability calculations, and preparation of a new stability booklet. It also requires class and flag state approvals, along with detailed planning for structural modifications, system upgrades, and compliance with all regulatory requirements related to ship conversion projects.
Converting a ship to a new fuel involves detailed engineering, safety assessment, and regulatory approval. The ship conversion process includes redesigning fuel storage and supply systems, adapting engines or installing dual-fuel technology, and updating safety systems for the chosen fuel. All modifications must comply with class and flag requirements, as well as international conversion regulatory approvals for ships using alternative fuels.
A new stability booklet is required after any ship conversion that affects weight distribution, hull form, or cargo capacity. The stability booklet preparation includes updated hydrostatics, loading conditions, and vessel stability calculations to verify compliance with IMO and class requirements. It is submitted for approval to classification societies and flag authorities as part of the ship conversion documentation.
Several ship conversions can significantly reduce fuel consumption and improve efficiency. Common upgrades include WASP (Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion) systems, optimized bow design, rudder and propeller modifications, and complete energy optimization studies. These conversions enhance hydrodynamic performance, reduce engine load, and help vessels meet stricter emission and efficiency targets.
The IMO requires all vessels to meet minimum intact and damage stability standards as defined in the International Code on Intact Stability (IS Code) and SOLAS regulations.
Each vessel must have an approved Stability Booklet or Trim and Stability documentation showing calculations for all loading conditions. These documents are reviewed by the classification society and form part of the vessel’s statutory certification.
IMO damage stability rules ensure that ships remain stable and afloat after hull damage or flooding.
These regulations influence ship design by defining compartment arrangements, watertight subdivision, and survivability criteria. Compliance affects the vessel’s layout, tank configuration, and loading limitations, directly contributing to safe operation and environmental protection.
A vessel’s stability booklet must include approved intact and damage stability calculations, hydrostatic data, and loading condition examples.
It also contains righting arm (GZ) curves, tank and compartment data, and operational instructions for masters and officers. The booklet must comply with IMO stability regulations and be approved by the classification society before the vessel enters service.
Class societies verify compliance with IMO stability regulations by reviewing approved stability documentation and conducting inclining or lightweight surveys on board.
They confirm that the vessel’s displacement, center of gravity, and tank arrangements match the approved design. Successful verification leads to the issue of relevant class and statutory certificates, confirming compliance with intact and damage stability requirements.
IMO stability calculations follow the Intact Stability Code and SOLAS. Methods include probabilistic damage stability and hydrostatic analysis.
Key criteria are righting arm (GZ), heel angle, and residual stability, ensuring vessels remain safe and compliant in all conditions.
