    FAQ

Answers to guide your maritime journey

CFD and FEA are advanced engineering tools used in ship and marine design. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analyses how water and air flow around a vessel to optimize performance and efficiency. FEA (Finite Element Analysis), also called FEM (Finite Element Method), evaluates structural strength and stress distribution in ships and marine engineering applications to ensure safety and reliability.

A damage stability calculation is a type of calculation required by IMO to verify that a vessel can remain stable and afloat after hull damage or flooding. These damage stability stability calculations ensure compliance with IMO regulations and confirm that the vessel meets international safety standards.

A damage stability calculation is performed as part of vessel stability calculations to assess how a ship behaves after flooding or hull damage. The ship stability calculation follows IMO stability calculation methods, where different damage scenarios are simulated to ensure that the vessel meets the required safety margins for buoyancy, trim, and heel.

A stability booklet contains the results of vessel stability calculations and ship stability calculations required by IMO. It includes lightship data, tank capacities, hydrostatic curves, loading conditions, and stability calculation IMO summaries that demonstrate compliance with intact and damage stability requirements.

A vessel’s stability calculations include data such as hull form, weight distribution, tank capacities, and loading conditions. For a damage stability calculation, additional inputs on compartment layout and flooding scenarios are included to meet IMO stability calculation requirements.

Yes, ship stability calculations are essential for vessel conversions and retrofits. Updated ship stability calculations, including damage stability calculation and intact stability assessments, ensure that modifications comply with IMO stability calculation requirements. A revised stability booklet is then issued to document the vessel’s new stability condition.

CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and FEA/FEM (Finite Element Analysis) are powerful tools used to optimize ship design and performance. CFD used in a marine context is applied to analyze water flow and resistance, improving hull efficiency and propulsion. FEA is used to evaluate hull structure strength and fatigue. Together, these FEM and CFD marine performance studies ensure safe, efficient, and reliable vessel designs.

Using CFD in a marine context to simulate ship performance is highly accurate when based on detailed hull geometry and verified setup. Modern CFD and FEA methods allow precise prediction of resistance, propulsion efficiency, and flow behavior. While full-scale conditions may vary slightly, CFD marine simulations combined with finite element analysis ensures reliable results for ship design and performance optimization.

FEM analysis of a hull structure, also referred to as finite element analysis in ship and marine engineering, uses inputs such as 3D geometry, material data, boundary conditions, and applied loads. These define the model used to evaluate structural strength, stiffness, and stress distribution in the hull.

CFD and FEA are different analysis methods used in ship design. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) predicts water and air flow to evaluate resistance and propulsion performance. FEA, or FEM analysis, focuses on structural strength, stresses, and deformations. Together, these finite element analysis ship tools ensure both efficient hydrodynamics and safe structural design.
