Green Shipbuilding Design
The Sustainable Choice
An over-all Reduced Climate Impact
Future Fuels
The maritime industry is constantly exploring new innovations, with new alternative fuels for ships of all types emerging on the horizon. Since fuel provides one of the best opportunities to reduce environmental impact without compromising performance, it is essential with a green ship design that is flexible and can be retrofitted for any type of future fuels. Our energy-efficient vessels are built with the capability to be converted to accommodate new alternative fuels as they become viable options, such as:
- Liquefied natural gas (LNG)
- Liquefied biogas (LBG)
- Methanol
- Ethanol
- Ammonia
- Hydrogen batteries including UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
- Flow batteries
Hull design
The hull is a critical component influencing a ship’s hydrodynamic performance and fuel efficiency, making it a vital aspect of achieving carbon neutral shipping. Designing an optimized hull involves a delicate balance of multiple factors, each contributing to the vessel’s overall efficiency and operational capability.
System design
Implementing smart systems that monitor and optimize energy use can lead to significant savings, making energy efficiency a critical focus area for green shipbuilding. System designs to take in account are for example waste heat recovery (WHR), intelligent ventilation systems, onboard equipment and the usage of shore power.
Regulations
When it comes to regulations, we of course follow the regional regulations such as the European Union’s stringent emission standards and carbon taxation systems. This to adopt green shipbuilding technologies and practices.

Our Focus
For us the word sustainability includes more than fuel-efficient vessels, hull design, system design and regulations and emissions. Therefore we always take in account surrounding aspects such as:
- Crew welfare – An environment onboard that is safe, inspiring and prepared for a crew of different gender, culture & religions.
- Reduced climate impact – The green shipbuilding ideas we have developed during the years that continuously improve.
- Index compliance – Is checked for owners to ensure that both newbuildings and existing vessels comply with different indexes set by authorities.
- Sustainable audits – Are made to guide owners on updates possible in combination with estimated return of investment.
- Opex/Capex – A balance of Opex & Capex is discussed both during concept development and during sustainable audits, where FKAB guides the owner in cost and return of investment.
- Green ship financing – Fundings of different kinds are available to help the green transition, and FKAB discusses such possibilities in many projects. We happily share ideas where to find support for green ship financing for your sustainable maritime construction.
In conclusion, we assist our clients in creating a green ship design that reduces climate impact, as well as matches their specific routes, trades, and operational needs.
