About FKAB T53

About FKAB T53 Project

The Utkilen T53 is a 7800 m3, ice class 1A, Stainless Steel Oil/Chemical tanker (IMO II &III) suitable for worldwide unrestricted operation, particularly designed for harsh North Sea weather. It is designed with high standard European accommodation and equipment, cargo capacity with a density of 1,85 ton/m3 and partial filling of 2,0 ton/m3 with a maximum temperature of 80°C and 0,6 bar overpressure.

The vessel is designed for very low fuel consumption at an ecospeed of 12,5 knots at 60% MCR with a 15% sea margin at design draught and an output from the shaft generator of 200 kW. The shaft generator will have variable frequency and can be used for boosting and take me home. These vessels are DF/LNG/LBG powered, all engines with IMO emission regulation

  • Client name: Utkilen
  • Industry: Transportation of chemicals and oil products.
  • Purpose: Enabling the safe, efficient and sustainable transportation of chemicals and liquid products.

WHAT WE DID

Delivering Efficiency, Sustainability & Performance

For the T53 FKAB Marine Design provided:

Designed the vessel with multi-fuel engines capable of operating on both LNG and LBG, along with a ‘skip fire’ functionality that allows the main engine to be used as an auxiliary engine when running on LNG. This setup supports increased fuel flexibility, improved energy efficiency, and reduced emissions.

Equipped with a UPS and a peak shaving battery pack to optimize energy usage, reduce fuel consumption, and enhance operational reliability. The shaft generator features variable frequency and can be used for power boosting and ‘take-me-home’ functionality when needed.

Equipped the vessel with a twisted flap rudder to improve maneuverability, and a Mewis duct and rudder bulb to optimize the water flow from the propeller, enhancing overall propulsion efficiency.

Optized the use of waste heat recovery for tank cleaning operations to reduce fuel consumption.

RESULTS AND IMPACT

The FKAB T53 objectives

Optimized fuel efficiency and achieved a low environmental footprint.

The dual-fuel propulsion system, shaft generator integration and controllable pitch propeller through reduction gear box with PTO/PTI/PTH together with the hybrid battery reduce fuel consumption and improve operational flexibility.

Optimized use of waste heat.

Achieved an effective use of waste heat from the engine to be used for flushing of cargo tanks to minimize the need for energy during this operation.

Enhanced Hydrodynamic Efficiency.

By combining a Mewis duct, rudder bulb, and flap rudder, the vessel achieves optimized water flow to the propeller, improving propulsion efficiency, reducing fuel consumption, and contributing to lower emissions during operation.
