About FKAB L22

About FKAB L22 Project

The FKAB L22 is a high-efficiency, Ice classed 1A, Tier III LNG bunker vessel designed for optimized performance in bunkering LNG in the most efficient way. A single screw propulsion system with two LNG cargo tanks of bi-lobe type, IMO type “Independent Type C”. F-Bow hull form to ensure good performance in waves and calm water and an estimated EEDI > 50% below the 2025 Phase III requirements. The vessel is equipped with a Gas Combustion Unit of 27,7 MW that will enable the vessel to perform cool down and warming up services to other vessels fuel tanks or cargo tanks.

The FKAB L22 sets new benchmarks in sustainability within LNG supply chain, operational efficiency, and fuel optimization, ensuring long-term performance and environmental compliance.

  • Client name: Gasum and Sirius shipping
  • Industry: LNG Bunkering
  • Purpose: Enabling the safe, efficient and sustainable transportation and bunkering of LNG and LBG.

WHAT WE DID

Delivering Efficiency, Sustainability & Performance

For the L22 FKAB Marine Design provided:

Used the experience and feed back from the success of the L8 Coralius Flexi Bunker feeder, to develop this new design, with larger cargo capacity, lower fuel consumption and low emission technologies.

Integrated a Gas Combustion Unit of 27,7 MW to enable the vessel to perform cool down and warming up services to other vessels fuel tanks or cargo tanks which provides a significant benefit to the vessel performance and customer offerings as the vessel can offer cooling and warming services to a wider range of LNG-fueled vessels and LNG carriers, enhancing its market competitiveness.

Incorporated a hybrid battery pack for UPS & peak shaving for both main engine and auxiliary engines.

Through a efficient hull shape and energy saving measures the estimated EEDI is >50% below the 2025 Phase III requirements.

RESULTS AND IMPACT

The FKAB L22 objectives

Optimized fuel efficiency

The dual-fuel propulsion system and shaft generator integration and controllable pitch propeller through reduction gear box withPTO/PTI/PTH together with the hybrid battery reduce fuel consumption and improve operational flexibility.

Enhanced bunker transfer capacity

The Gas Combustion Unit will enable the vessel to perform cool down and warming up services to other vessels fuel tanks or cargo tanks so the vessel can vessel can pre-condition LNG tanks by cooling them down before bunkering, reducing boil-off gas (BOG) losses and improving fuel transfer efficiency. It also enables controlled warming up of tanks after LNG discharge, preventing thermal shock and structural stress.

Increased operational reliability

A full UPS backup with a 400 kWh battery prevents blackouts, improving onboard safety and efficiency.
