WHAT WE DID

Delivering innovation and sustainability

For the FKAB I16 FKAB Marine Design provided:

Integrated an advanced cargo tank support system to accommodate thermal expansion, ensuring structural integrity for high-temperature cargo.

Designed with a twin skeg propulsion system powered by dual-fuel (diesel/LNG) coupled to controllable pitch propeller and two shaft generators optimizing fuel efficiency and propulsion performance.

Incorporated a DC-link system to the shaft generators allowing variable speed control for both propulsion and energy generation, reducing overall fuel consumption.

Developed a full UPS backup system with a 400 kWh battery to prevent blackouts and enhance operational reliability.

RESULTS AND IMPACT

The FKAB I16 successfully achieved its objectives

Optimized fuel efficiency

The dual-fuel propulsion system and shaft generator integration with DC link significantly reduce fuel consumption and improve operational flexibility. The shaft generators will also be used as motors (PTI) when running on slow speed with just one main engine

Enhanced cargo handling for high-temperature products

Advanced thermal expansion design ensures reliable and safe transportation of bitumen and asphalt at up to 200°C. The cargo tank support are arranged in such a way that it allows free expansion in all directions and the is no structure inside the cargo tanks.

Increased operational reliability

A full UPS backup with a 400 kWh battery prevents blackouts, improving onboard safety and efficiency.
