The new all-electric ferry designed by FKAB Marine Design for Tjörns Hamnar AB was in mid October launched in Poland and will make its final outfitting at Hvide Sande Shipyard in Denmark.
The vessel represents a significant step forward in sustainable short-distance ferry transport. It will replace the current ferry Hakefjord, which has served the routes between Tjörn, Tjörnekalv, Åstol and Stora Dyrön since 1998. The new vessel is designed to meet modern environmental requirements while providing reliable and efficient transport in the Bohuslän archipelago.
A Collaborative Effort for Green Innovation
This project is the result of close collaboration between FKAB Marine Design, Hvide Sande Shipyard, and METS Technology. While FKAB is responsible for the complete ship design, METS will do electric design and supply electrical equipment.
The ferry will be Hvide Sande Shipyard’s tenth vessel built with electric or hybrid propulsion, strengthening the yard’s reputation as a leader in sustainable shipbuilding.
Technical Highlights
The vessel features:
Preparing for a Greener Future
The new ferry is designed with long-term sustainability in mind, offering low emissions, quiet operation, and high efficiency. Battery charging will be handled both via onboard converters and directly from shore using rapid DC charging, depending on port infrastructure.
The vessel will continue to provide essential transport services in the Tjörn region, but now with a significantly lower environmental footprint.
FKAB’s Commitment to Sustainability
This project demonstrates FKAB’s ongoing commitment to helping shipowners transition to sustainable solutions through innovative design. With decades of experience in ship design for various vessel types, FKAB continues to support clients in implementing new technologies that meet both regulatory requirements and operational needs.
